About this Condition

Arachnoiditis is a painful condition characterized by inflammation of the arachnoid, one of the three membranes that surround and protect the nerves of the spinal cord.

This inflammation can lead to the formation of scar tissue and adhesions, which can disrupt the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid and compress nerves, causing severe pain and neurological deficits.

Patients with arachnoiditis often experience chronic pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle cramps, primarily in the back and limbs.

In severe cases, it can lead to bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction due to nerve impairment.

The condition is notoriously difficult to treat and is often diagnosed through patient history, clinical examination, and imaging studies such as MRI, which can reveal characteristic changes in the spinal cord and surrounding tissues.

Management focuses on pain relief and improving quality of life, as there is currently no cure.

Treatment may involve physical therapy, medications, and in some cases, surgery to alleviate symptoms.

Arachnoiditis requires a multidisciplinary approach for optimal management, often involving neurologists, pain specialists, and rehabilitation experts.

Understanding and addressing the underlying causes, such as infections, surgeries, or trauma that may have led to the inflammation, are crucial steps in managing this condition.
